Dear Friends in Europe and the World - why we are defending the Rospuda Valley
You are probably wondering what this Rospuda story is all about. And what is going on in Poland, the country of strange and crazy developments. Or, as my fiancee Nuria says (she is Spanish) the country of many possibilities. Well, Rospuda is a small forrest brook winding its way along a beautiful marshy valley, where there are many rare birds and even rarer orchids. The place is simply overwhelmingly beautiful. Unfortunately, our government wants to build there a circular road for the town of Augustów.
This seems devoid of any common sense as there are many better sites for the road and building it here violates the European law. But Polish bureaucrats dug their feet in. Why? I do not know and couldn’t possibly explain. That is also why Poland is a country of many possibilities. But they shall not have it easy. As it turns out thousands of Poles and Europeans have stood up in defence of this small brook. We all do it for different reasons. But mostly we would like the politicians to stop destroying beautiful things.
We have set up camp on the Rospuda where over a hundered people are ready to stop the buldozers. Demonstrations are held in many Polish cities. People wear green ribbons to show their solidarity with us. Meanwhile politicians seem to be surprised – another surprise from the country of many possibilities.
